I feel…at home again. I didn’t really understand the weight we’ve all been carrying around until today. I was teaching the lovliest class of ten year olds earlier. They were giving presentations on what they’ve learned about being gifted, the benefits and challenges of their personal characteristics and the goals they have for maximizing their potential.
They were so kind to one another, telling each other how impressive their work was and how they were inspired to add to their presentations by something another had shared and also making suggestions for improvement. One of them said “being gifted means you ache for knowledge.” 💖 It was very important to them to highlight that being gifted doesn’t mean you’re better than anyone but that you’re also not weird. You’re just a little different in some ways. They mentioned bits of their unique cultures–Filipino, Ethiopian, Japanese and Indian and shared curiosity about each other. I just love their humility, generosity and capacity for compassion–a microcosm of what feels like home to me.
Throughout this inauguration day, I felt so moved by the representation of all of the beautiful skin tones, so many beautiful words, a message of EVERYONE being valuable and the earth being sacred. The gift we take away may be complacency shaken, hunger to finish the work renewed and an aching for knowledge and wisdom to move us forward. This is not a pass but an opportunity, and I will hold our leadership accountable for doing the very hard work of moving us toward equity and harmony and reverence for this planet and all its creatures. It is so incredibly good to feel like I’m home again. Breathing deeply again. 💖
