Releasing Everyday Magic

Several years ago I found the delightful poem “The Magic Box” and used it as a springboard to a writing activity for my K-5th graders. They wrote beautiful lines—even my first graders—like I will put in my box…yellow lemonade pouring into a glass and one large green leaf floating on the water…the little red house with smoke coming from the chimney in Tennessee. That poem and the writing project have floated in and out of my life and teachingfor years.

A few years ago, I wrote this piece at the height of the Covid emotional flatness. It seems all to appropriate again…“Find your magic.” The message comes printed on holiday kitsch and illustrated on oracle cards shuffled and turned only when a certain sensation moves about your fingertips. But even the sparkle of the little joys you have, for so long, openly received and appreciated has gone hollow filled instead with an ache that pulses and then turns numb. You want to feel but fear that sorrow rests right beneath the skin with a rising tide and a sinking depth that could easily pull you under. Then there’s a small voice that urges you to trust even if you can not see. Listen… Read the whole piece here: https://wp.me/pcEHod-ay.

And then last spring after three months of intensive soul purpose work with a guide, I spent 8 hours on the land in solitude listening. The message I received is, “You are everyday magic. You live it and that is what the world needs from you.” All stored safe somewhere inside me but none of it sketched out in a plan, this winter break in a particularly generative flurry, I understood that the little box I long wanted to create was going to be an Everyday Magic Box. And so began a few months of planning and gathering and creating and making space for folks to help me bring this little box into the world.

Yesterday, with the help of lovely friends, we gave birth to the Everyday Magic Box. On this beautiful not quite Spring day, there were delicious treats like meringues, banana bread, and espresso cheese. I made lavender syrup, cucumber-blueberry water, and even got to use my new chicken’s first two eggs to make lemon cookies. We had a guided visualization on finding your magic, there was spring-themed music, and we created in community with lots of laughter. For just a little bit, all was beautiful with the world.

If you’re local and you’d like to come get or give some magic, stop by the Magic Box any time! If you’d like to contribute something from afar, connect with me directly and I’ll give you mailing info. You could even virtually choose something for me to send you!

After a little rest, I’ll start conjuring up the next bit of magic we might co-create!
