Dad went on ahead overnight on June 22, and I am certain joined a big starlit celebration with my sister Sandy, his sister Diane, and his life love, Louann. There was a time when they were often together on laughter-filled marathon buzzing around town adventures, and they’ve all visited him in recent weeks as he was in transition.

Poppy, I will think of you and feel your presence every time I walk in the woods and hear birdsong, when I look into the sparkling night sky, while listening to Simon and Garfunkel, when I go to the oceanfront before a storm to see foam blowing down the beach and feel the exhilarating power of building winds, when I hear the train whistles in the near distance, upon finding a snake sunning on the shore in Azalea Gardens, and a million other moments.
I know I’ll miss you most every time I start to call you to ask about something in history or the natural world or to tell you about a curious observation I’ve made and get your theory about it. And each time I realize that there’s no one to send me a text asking if I got home alright.
Love you to infinity and beyond.
We’ll be sharing a date for a celebration of life a little later with the opportunity to come to one last big party in the Bielmann house.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Kim. When we lose those closest to us, we lose the part of ourselves that came most to life when we were with that person we loved. I’m glad you have these memories that will be little visits from your Poppy in the future. They tell me how much he loved you!

Thank you, Jane. I really appreciate that perspective, as my dad didn’t often use words that I so value to express his love. I had to learn to see it through a different lens. 💖
